Gay and Lesbian adults would be wise to consider the following items to protect themselves and their loved ones, especially when planning their aging.

  1. Create a Basic Estate Plan.  This would include a Will and/or Living Trust, Powers of Attorney (POA) for Property and Finances, and a Durable Power of Attorney for Healthcare and Advanced Directives.  Do these now.

  1. Plan for old age, illness, and disability.  Research disability insurance, long-term care insurance, and life insurance.

  1. Provide for Liquidity:  Contemplate investing in life insurance if you need to leave assets for a surviving partner or children.
