Medicare Legislation

The Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act of 2008, HR-6331, was introduced in the House of Representatives on June 20.  It passed the House 355-59 on June 24.  On June 26, the Senate failed to vote to close debate on this legislation by a vote of 58-40.  [60 votes are needed for a cloture vote.]  Thus, the legislation is in limbo while Congress is on their July 4 recess.  It will probably be taken up again in the Senate [probably with some modifications] after the July 4...

The impact of caregiving

The process of relocating my grandmother and getting her settled into a safe and satisfying environment has been exhausting and life altering. It has forced me to look at my role in the family and figure out which responsibilities are mine and which are not. I have had to deal with feeling guilty about what I can contribute and how I choose to spend my time. I love my Geriatric Care Manager!

The Geriatric Care Manager continues to be an amazing resource for my family even after the initial meeting. She provided websites and phone numbers of agencies and facilities that were needed in order to relocate my grandmother. The Care Manager provides clarity, support, and assistance to my family. Her services have been the platform from which we were able to...

The thrill is gone, and grandma still needs help

Now that grandma is settled into the assisted living place all of the family has backed off. It was such a grueling couple of months trying to get her settled into the apartment and then with the hospital stay... her life monopolized all of ours. Now she is feeling "put out to pasture" (her words) because she feels stuck in an environment she hasn't prepared herself for. I feel bad because I have a hard time fitting her into my schedule and when I do have time, I have started to look at some of...

Meet Ann, lessening my load as caregiver

When I found out that my grandmother needed to move from out of state to my area, I felt completely overwhelmed. I knew my life was going to change because I was going to be expected to meet many of her needs when my own life felt full already. I needed to determine whether or not she could still live on her own and if she could, I had to ask myself if I would be able to provide enough care for her in between working full time and balancing my own family. Once the decision was made to move her...
