My 82 year-old father is sleeping a lot, not eating, isolating at home, and grumpy. He doesn't go out and participate in the activities he used to. What might be happening, and how do we help him?

The first step is to make sure no medical reasons are causing him to be this way – thyroid disease can present this way. Lack of interest in things that he used to enjoy, poor appetite, increased or decreased sleep, may also be symptoms of depression. Please make his physician aware of your concerns, as your father may not be as forthcoming with the information.
