Is depression just a normal part of getting older? What can I do to avoid this as I age?

Depression is not normal at any age and the incidence of new cases does not increase with age. There are more losses as we age: loved ones, careers, functional abilities, that can lead to depression. Those who are able to adapt to changes in their lives are those who age most successfully. Take care of yourself mentally and physically, and surround yourself with supportive friends and family.
